We are looking at talent, 08/09 Premiership performances and contribution.
The idea of the GreatestPlayerEver.com site is that we are looking to find the greatest Premiership player of all-time. One question that won’t be answered is who the greatest current Premiership player is. We are looking at talent, 08/09 Premiership performances and contribution.
We are going to list our top ten at the moment. This includes all the players who played in the 08/09 season – we have to include Ronaldo, right?!
Steven Gerrard
Liverpool’s talisman had another superb season netting an impressive 16 Premiership goals in 31 appearances. Stevie G is now in his prime – anyone agree that he could finally pick up the World Player Of The Year Award in 09/10?
Cristiano Ronaldo
A sub-par season for the Portuguese winger still netted him an £80 million move to Real Madrid. 18 goals in 33 appearances and not even not performing at his best, his is still undoubtedly the most talented footballer on the planet – does this make him the greatest?
Frank Lampard
Another impressive season from Lampard brought a tally of 12 goals in the Premiership. Lampard is definitely one of the Premiership’s all-time great midfield goalscorers and performers and continues to do the business week-in week-out. I wonder where Chelsea would have finished without Lampard fit for the full season of Premiership football?
Wayne Rooney
Overshadowed in recent seasons, Ronaldo’s unusually quiet season allowed Rooney to drive United forward with some moments of sheer brilliance. In an unfamiliar deeper role in the 08/09 season, Rooney clocked up an impressive 12 goals in 30 appearances (a far better goal-to-game ratio than Chelsea’s Frank Lampard who made 37 Premiership appearances). Another one who could seriously be battling Gerrard for World Player Of The Year if he can follow on from his superb performances in 08/09.
Andrei Arshavin
Only signed in January, the top three will be kicking themselves they didn’t snap up Arshavin when they had the chance. Lighting up the Premiership with 6 goals in 12 games and with 4 of these coming against Liverpool in a world class performance, Wenger may not be able to hold onto the Russian for too long.
Nemanja Vidic
Every season Vidic gets stronger and stronger. In a season where United beat the Premiership consecutive clean sheet record, Vidic also scooped the Barclay’s Premiership Player Of The Award. Does this make him the greatest player in the current crop of Premiership stars?
Didier Drogba
A slow start to the season under Scolari left many suprised he didn’t jump ship in January, Drogba made a massive impact to Chelsea’s title push in the second half of the season despite only netting 5 goals. No-one will doubt his ability and effectiveness but will we see Drogba back to his best in 09/10?
Cesc Fabregas
Fabregas only appeared 22 times this season but the Arsenal side are a completely different side with the Spaniard pulling the strings in the centre of the park. In surely his last season at Arsenal (he is so destined to ditch England for Barcelona!), can he push Arsenal on to make a serious title challenge this season?
Michael Essien
One of the Premiership’s most underrated players, Essien pretty much covers every blade of grass and can play anywhere along the back or in the middle of the park without looking out of place. He made only 11 appearances this season but with him playing 38 games in 08/09, Chelsea could be champions – all if’s and buts
.
Tim Cahill
With Everton’s injury disaster this season which pretty much totally wiped out their frontline, Cahill fired in 8 goals in 30 appearances in a make-shift strike force (either with Fellaini, Anichebe or on his tod). Everton finished a suprising 5th place and continue to prove the doubters wrong. Cahill’s contribution to Everton’s final placing in the Premiership can’t be ignored.
So there is our top ten. Some may be controversial, some emissions may suprise you but please leave a comment and let us know your thoughts…
